Ok. Let's face it. Black people love being black. We love our swagger, our style, our talk, our uniqueness, but most importantly we love letting everybody else know that we love who we are. I know for a fact I would never relinquish my "blackness" . So a couple nights ago my school held our first annual poetry slam. A few of my students were performing so I went to show my support. I must say I was very impressed, you'd be surprised just how talented and creative some kids are. Anyway, of the 25 poets to perform, I think 7 or 8 were black. All except one performed a poem about being black. While I was excited to see young black kids having an understanding of their culture and self-worth, I still thought it was a little cliche for the kids to perform the typical "proud to be black" spoken word poem. Regardless of what I believed to be a lack of creativity, it was still clear that these kids loved being black. It got me thinking, why is it okay for us to be so proud and vocal about our culture? But if a white kid performed a "I'm White and proud" poem, we would be outraged? Or would we?
WOW! I definitely did a post the other day comparing T-Pain to George Clinton.... I clearly thought he was mid-thirties at least. That explains the immaturity in his lyrics at least, right?
ReplyDeleteBlack people do love being Black. When I was in high school my friends and I were so pro-Black we would preach to the White kids in our advanced classes about how we were better than them because we're Black. LOL!
I think that there is a need to assert pride in an attribute that have been discrimated for having for centuries. Being black is no longer an emotional hinderance when we stand up and say that we are proud of it.

as far as the being proud of being black thing is because we were oppressed and made to think we were less of a person. white people have been saying white power since the building of the country by enslaving us. they had their time to shine... now it will always and forever be ours.

When I read the part about T-Pain I had a flash back to "Bad Boys 2" when Will Smith was acting Like he was an ex con to scare Martin's Daughter's date. "YHow old is you?...N*gga you at least bout 40"
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't be upset at someone if they performed a "white pride" piece I'd actually be amused and curious to see where they would go with the content. Who wound up winning the slam?

ReplyDeletegreat post fam. I don't think I would outrage if a whited person said I'm white and proud, because we say it boldly. I would have to give that person reasonable doubt that he is not racist.
ReplyDeleteThat must be T-Pain's "industry" age because there's no way that man is younger than me!!!! If he is, he needs to lay off the drinking and smoking because he looks mid-30s at best!
ReplyDeleteYes, we black people are proud to be black because for hundreds of years we were told that it was a bad thing to be black, I'm glad we embrace it!
As for white people displaying "white pride" it might be a double-standard, but so be it -- we've earned that right! LOL!!

First I gotta say that this is a great post!! and I like the vibe over here. I'm searching for my swagger too!! lol As far as being black and proud. I have wondered the same question. I mean I'm proud as hell to be black but if a white guy said he was proud to be white it would be crazy. It's just one of those double standards that we have learned to live with. Like if a guy dates a bunch of girls he's a "playa" or "big dawg" but if a female dates a bunch of guys she's a "hoe" or "loose".. IDK Just my thought.

i don't know...i never thought about it. i guess we shouldn't be disturbed if they did, but depending of what they put in the poem (i always pay my bills on time, i've never been arrested, i'm not on welfare..) i might be a little put off. you know cause the opposite of what i just said is what stuff people say about black people or at least they are widely held perceptions.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right. I love everything about being black. And a black woman. WOW, I'm just one powerful chick. And they know the power that we possess. That's why they so damn scared to let us even get an inch. Imagine what it will be like when Obama wins. YAY. I feel like a kid waiting for my daddy to make this big promotion within his all white law firm.
ReplyDeleteOh, anyway back to being black. How can we be mad? They don't have to make no damn poems. Just look around you. They shouting that they are white and proud all around us. We just so use to it, it has become the norm.
No way that T-pain is under 25. LOL. Black swagger is uncomparable. People so badly wanted it to be seen as a negative notion, that now once we've embraced it, the whole world wants to.
